Abstract

The Madeira River Waterway is the second most important transportation and cargo transportation route in the Amazon, behind only the Amazon River. it also travels residents of traditional communities belonging to the Municipality of Porto Velho, not only travel, but also has a relationship of sustainability to the river. This paper aims to analyze empirical features related to usage of waterway transport in the region. A survey  was conducted with interviews and questionnaires with residents of the traditional communities of the districts of São Carlos, Nazaré, Calama and Demarcação, visits in competent authorities and bibliography review. As a result, it is expected to provide technical subsidies to assist in planning the mobility of studied communities, provide access to basic services and expanding the field of study on the subject.
