Reverence to the Pretos Velhos in a Capixaba Quilombo: May 13th at the São Jorge Prayer Center, in Sítio dos Crioulos, Jerônimo Monteiro-ES

Abstract

Sunday, May 21, 2023. At daybreak, Mr Willa Tiburso arrives at the São Jorge Prayer Center, in the Quilombo of Sitio dos Crioulos, to organize the Terreiro for the party to the Old Blacks - the 13th of May. The Quilombo, which was founded in 1875, is located in the Jerônimo Monteiro Rural Zone, south of ES, and was certified by the Palmares Foundation in 2016. Willa, a gentleman of 78 years old, is an extrovert historian trained by the experience of black ancestry who dedicates his life to building the popular and religious culture south-capixaba, including the Terreiro and the Folia de Reis. This photo shoot, one of the fruits of the years of work of the Conexões Quilombolas Project, is a tribute to the community of Sitio dos Crioulos, to Mr Willa, to Ladies Penha and Maria da Conceição (in memoriam), guardians of knowledge and stories of that territory.
