The Fight for the “Direct” and the Constituent in Brazil

Unpublished text by Vânia Bambirra, from 1986, which deals with the historical struggle of Brazilian popular movements around the democratization of Brazil, through direct elections for the executive power, and the convening of a constituent assembly. Starting from a Marxist critical perspective on dependency, the author presents the meaning of mass mobilizations, at the end of the dictatorship, in favor of direct elections, their defeat in parliament and the decision to call constituent elections. At the end, she analyzes the probable nature of the aforementioned constituent assembly, highlighting its institutional and class contours, anticipating critics that history has proven to be correct.
