Commodified women
intersections between Marxist theory and Irigaray

In this essay, two seemingly distant philosophical traditions converge: Marxist theory and sexual difference feminism. While exploring shared conceptual ground between these frameworks, the primary aim is to unpack Luce Irigaray’s analogy between the status of women in patriarchal society and that of commodities in capitalist society. As the argument develops, the work shifts toward understanding the effects of a pragmatic reading (or method) applied to feminist texts. This leads us to ask: What do such words do? Though Irigaray has been widely read by philosophers of language and is recognized for her contributions to a feminine symbolic, one crucial dimension often goes unnoticed—the situatedness from which she speaks, that is, her very difficulty of speaking. Yet she is not alone: other philosophers, including Adriana Cavarero, Judith Butler, Nancy Fraser, and Terry Winant (to name the key figures discussed here), articulate their theories from analogous standpoints [Standpunkt—Georg Lukács].
