Abstract

The article entitled “In the currents of love: The Paraguayan War (1864-1870) in the Letters from Custódio de Melo to his promised bride, Janú”, presented elements of a
private nature for the study of the plantation dispute. The author narrates the war event from two points of view. The first reveals that the combatants went to war motivated by personal issues, in other words, in search of military promotions and stipend payments. The second point of view, associated the conflict with the day-to-day aspect, presenting the battlefields as spaces where the suffering and pain is caused by the difficulties imposed by the conflict. As such, we reflect about the limits of the imperial political project with regard to the elaboration of images and ideas of Brazil. The sources indicate that the governmental initiative advances upon individual interests, by not assuring the desired homeland love.
