Abstract

This paper discusses when-clauses. Our focus is a comparison between Portuguese and Spanish data. These languages exhibit a distinction in the realization of the mood-temporal system in future contexts. While Portuguese utilizes the future subjunctive in when-clauses, Spanish utilizes the present subjunctive. A further mode of realization is found in French and Italian, which utilize the future indicative. We follow the hypothesis that these distinctions can be analyzed using [Mood] and [Tense] features. We also discuss the typology of when-clauses, following Declerck (1997), who proposes a typology of English when-clauses and emphasizes the syntactico-semantic contexts in which when occurs, for example, adverbial, narrative, atemporal, relative, etc. For this study, we will consider three uses: relative, prepositional and polysemic.
