Ruth Guimarães (1920-2014) was an intellectual and writer interpreter of Brazil. In his only novel, "Água funda" (1946) mainly reflected national time as a matrix of coloniality. In the first part of this article, I present the trajectory of the black woman author and the consequences of the erasure she suffered for her contemporary reception. In the second, I analyze some aspects of the novel, highlighting the narrative elaboration as the driver of an Afro-diasporic inscription that raises new interpretations about the nation.
