Abstract

The article attempts to offer an alternative reading of Jacques Offenbach and the Paris of his time (1937), by Siegfried Kracauer. To do this, he uses the current interpretations that open up new perspectives of a work that deserved more attention from critics of culture. Faced with the unilateral readings that reduce Kracauer's book to the discursive genre of the essay, the present article proposes a reading that, together with the argumentative level, develops and highlights a narrative stratum that allows the link with the literary genre artist novel, a form that it has a long tradition in the German literature tradition.
