Purpose: to understand how the practices of disseminating scientific output can be performed by a scientific journal to achieve altimetric indicators. It discusses the use of Altmetrics in a scientific journal in the field of Social Policy. Material and methods: it describes research with a quantitative approach, linking exploratory and descriptive research. It employs bibliographic and documentary research and the application of the free version of Altmetric's Altmetric Attention Score to measure and quantify downloads of articles in the studied sample (issues published in 2021 in the thematic section) and the journal's impact. Discussion: it, shows that the analysed journal has an active page on a social network, but it is outdated, which makes it difficult to analyse the impact of content on social networks based on Altmetrics; notes that the journal is classified in the upper stratum A1 by Qualis Periódicos Capes; notes that the authors’ profile is characterised by a high standard of training and titles in the area covered by this journal and in the scientific field. Conclusion: concludes that the use of Altmetrics in the journal studied achieved satisfactory results in terms of its effectiveness as a method of evaluating and monitoring the dissemination of academic research, it recognises the efficiency of the tool in measuring the impact of an article and/or authors and even for evaluating volumes of a scientific journal; due to the lack of disclosure by the authors and their respective publications on social networks, the analysed journal obtained low visibility and impact, and little engagement on networks such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook in the evaluation carried out, and recommends: a) expanding the dynamic use of editorial tools beyond the current automatic use of e-mail to send authors and registered users information about new published volumes, calls for submission and publicising the authors who publish in the journal; boost dissemination on social networks to increase views of published articles, whether through the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) number in current publications, or of previous publications, to generate engagement in quality publications, but not viewed.
