Abstract

The development of collections is a cyclical process, whose objective is to keep a library aligned with the informational desires of its community. To guarantee this process, several methods have been proposed, but none of them adopted a pragmatic approach involving smart contracts on the blockchain. In this context, this research aims to seek a blockchain-oriented method, using smart contracts in the stages of collection development to assist information professionals in managing a bibliographic collection. The methodology is characterized as exploratory and descriptive, based on the literature available in the area on the resources offered by the blockchain, and is developed in three stages: search and selection of works in the scientific literature; analysis and selection of public code repositories; and, finally, the summary. As a result, the main resources needed at each stage of the process and the various implementations of smart contracts were identified. In the Web of Science and Scopus databases, of the 631 works, 16 were identified that presented pragmatic proposals. Still, through an objective evaluation, Ethereum was chosen, among five identified projects, as the blockchain for the development of smart contracts. Finally, the results are satisfactory, even not having found a smart contract aimed at libraries.
