The purpose of this article is to analyze the influences of Afro-Brazilian religions, in particular Umbanda, within the national musical expression, with emphasis on samba. Musical expression that was formed from the process of assimilation, adaptation and deculturation of African rhythms and instruments in contact with white European culture. It seeks to raise some questions about the appropriations that numerous composers have made and make of the deities of the Afro pantheon and of the sung points - Umbanda songs - in their musical compositions.
