Motivation to read as well as to learn are important variables for learning. This study is aimed at describing
the steps for constructing a reading motivation scale for teenagers and youngsters, as well as at presenting its psychometric properties and construct validity. The sample was composed of 329 students from the 6th year of elementary school to the 3rd year of high school. Exploratory factor analysis of the 83 items revealed six factors coherent with the continuum of Self Determination Theory with internal consistencies ranging from 0.97 to 0.76. These initial results evince the promising psychometric properties of the scale for its use in the educational context.
