Abstract

This research was designed to study the content of the
Brazilian Indian stereoptype. A sample of 582 male and female
university students was used. The word-association technique was
employed, "indian" being used as the stimulus-word. Subjects were
asked to indicate the percentage of Indians and Brazilians characterized
by each of their responses, in order to establish the diagnostic
ratio for each word-associated with the stimulus. The indian stereotype
was composed, almost exclusively, of external symbols and its content
was partially affected by subject's gender.
