Abstract

This paper attempts to demonstrate how a cultural perspective has helped a Business English teacher better evaluate a course book used with College students. After selecting a specific course book and having used it with many different groups of students, a teacher realizes that the supporting material is too “dry” at times and comes to the conclusion that culture might be one of the intervening factors. As the
teacher researches more and more about culture, it becomes clear that the term evades a simple definition which, in its turn, makes the analysis seem excessively theoretical and distant. However, supported by
Shore’s (1996) definition of culture as models, a critical look at globalization and the commodification of language, the authors seem to capture parts of the treatment given to culture in the course book that were
not easily seen during day-to-day utilization of the material.
