Live fences are linear vegetable units, uniformly planted at agroecosystems borders, becoming integral part of agriculture production systems. This study has as objective to identify native and naturalized species with potential for live fences in Agroforestry Systems in the South Region of RS. One experiment with live fences has been implemented in the Cascata Experimental Station - Embrapa Clima Temperado, in a line of 36m, divided in three blocks, each block with six intercrop (treatments). Each one of the six intercrops was composed of 16 individuals and three species. The survival and growing rate of each species was evaluated. All Brazilian native plants showed potential for use in live fences. Iuca (Yucca guatemalensis), dracena (Dracaena marginata) and margaridão (Tithonia diversifolia) were the ones revealed as most promising between the naturalized species. The intercrop including mamão-do-mato (Vasconcelle quercifolia), composed by native species and non-conventional food plants was the one that presented the highest potential for the use in the live fences.
