Auguste de Saint-Hilaire and the territories of exception (Minas Gerais, 1816-1817)

Abstract

This article identifies, in the French traveller Auguste de Saint-Hilaire's discourse, the representation of “exception territories” during his stay in Brazil. Despite the botanist having travelled Brazilian lands between 1816 and 1822, this article analyzes the first tome of his work Voyages dans l'intérieur du Brésil that reports his experiences between the years of 1816 and 1817, in Rio de Janeiro City and Minas Gerais Province. A geohistorical method was used to identify, in the text, the characteristics that the Brazilian territory had for the traveler and, also, the way that he perceived the native groups with which he came into contact. Database and digital cartography techniques were used, in addition to an ancient cartography analysis, resulting in a multidisciplinary and critical research that intends to unfold the primary source.
