Abstract

This text addresses Choay's propositions on authenticity, based on her writing of 1995. This article aims to point out some themes, and not exhaust them, directing them more explicitly to the disciplinary field of restoration. To do so, firstly, aspects of how authenticity was understood in the Venice Charter and the doubts it generated are addressed. Afterwards, the notions of monument and historic monument and their relations with the cultural visions of time are examined. Next, it focuses on aspects of Choay's propositions about authenticity, highlighting the need for rigorous and critical analysis to face the issues. The article also emphasizes the author's view that the memorial function, the living memory, must also be mobilized for historic monuments, in order to maintain our competence to build, to structure the landscape and to inhabit space and time. Finally, it analyzes how this discussion contributes to the current reflection on restoration.

Beatriz Mugayar Kuhl, Universidade de São Paulo; Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo; Pós-graduação na área de História e Fundamentos da Arquitetura e Urbanismo

Full Professor (2017) at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (FAUUSP), Department of History of Architecture and Aesthetics of Design, institution where she joined as a professor in 1998. She holds a degree in Architecture and Urbanism from FAUUSP (1987), a master's degree from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (1992), Belgium, a PhD from FAUUSP (1996) and a post-doctorate from Sapienza Università di Roma (2001; 2005). She coordinated one of the research axes of the Preventive Conservation Plan for the Vilanova Artigas Building (FAUUSP), Keeping It Modern programme - Getty Foundation (07.2015-03.2018). She was Head of Department (AUH-FAUUSP) from November 2015 to November 2019. She was part of the USP working groups - initially Paulista Museum Working Group 2022, later Ipiranga Museum Steering Committee 2022 - with a view to the reopening of the Ipiranga Museum (2016-2022). She is dedicated to disciplines of preservation of cultural assets, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Her research addresses theoretical and methodological issues of restoration, with special interest in industrial heritage. She has published several books - among them Arquitetura do ferro e arquitetura ferroviária em São Paulo (São Paulo, Ateliê/FAPESP/SEC, 1998), Preservação do patrimônio arquitetônico da industrialização (Ateliê/FAPESP, 2009, 2nd ed. 2018) - as well as articles.
