Abstract

The aim of studies developed by the University of Brasilia research group Sustainability in Architecture is to create intra-urban public space sustainability structural indicators and indices. Based on the results of an analytical and theoretical framework already developed, these indices evaluate the urbanization patterns and solutions adopted in the city. The first step in the construction of such indicators and indices is to make the underlying conceptual framework explicit; after that, we analyze the likelihood of scale transfer or transposition: from the general to the particular, from the city to the neighborhood or block, and from these to the city. Our intra-city indicator has two thematic indices: quality of life and environmental system quality and both of them are used to reflect upon social issues regarding environment for policy and decision-making processes. The data are divided according to 3 large urban properties: morphology (frontier surface, vertical planes); networks (fluxes, base, horizontal planes) and Mass (surroundings, vegetation, water, buildings).
