Abstract

This article aims to identify and analyze the heritage documents and related legislation referring to indigenous cultural heritage, emphasizing the way in which these instruments have been approaching the preservation of ethnographic collections and, more recently, the shared stewardship with indigenous peoples. For this purpose, documents produced at the national and international levels were consulted, and those with the traditional, ethnological, ethnographic and/or indigenous terms were selected. A total of 16 documents were identified and analyzed, including heritage charters, declarations, recommendations, policies and legislation. Through the analysis, it was possible to verify the transformations that occurred in the scope of the valorization of the indigenous ethnographic collections, from their recognition as heritage to be preserved until the current moment of indication of the shared stewardship with the groups.
