Abstract

In the late 1960s, Georges Canguilhem took up the work of the historian of chemistry Hélène Metzger to pose a fundamental question for the theory and method of the history of science, but rarely asked aloud: of what is the History of Science the history? The delimitation of its object was fundamental for the movement of autonomy of the History of Sciences in relation to the Philosophy of Sciences, as well for its subsequent transformation in a historical discipline. Fifty years later, the question about the object of the history of science was taken up by Lorraine Daston to reflect on the relationship between the History of Science and the History of Knowledge. The article turns to the different answers given to the same question Canguilhem and Daston to reflect on the historicity of the discipline.
