A escravidão negra nas terras brasileiras se constituiu em um processo de longa duração. Ela foi fundamental na expansão da economia e na formação socioeconômica e cultural de nossa nacionalidade. Na segunda metade do século XIX, todavia, surgiu, no Brasil, o movimento abolicionista, que defendia o fim da escravidão nestas terras. A libertação dos escravos ocorreu devido a uma série de fatores, dentre eles o abolicionismo. Todavia, este artigo tem por objetivo analisar o pensamento de Antônio Coelho Rodrigues frente ao processo de abolição da escravidão durante a segunda metade do século XIX. Para isso, utilizaremos como fonte principal o livro Manual do súbdito fiel, ou cartas de um lavrados a sua majestade o Imperador.
