Abstract

This paper sets out to explore Marx's evolution towards scientific socialism. The first part of this article analyses Marx's relation to Feuerbach's materialism, his affinities for religion and his criticism of the relationship between men and society. Then, it examines the Marxist critique of Hegelian philosophy departing from the concept of alienation. Finally, from this critique, there derives as a counterpart of the alienation of mankind its connection with its own capacities: humans' generic essence, which is present in the artistic work and becomes the concrete basis for their independence or freedom.
