O arco de Sant'Anna is a historie novel of apparently doubtful aesthetic value in face of the remaining works by Almeida Garret. However, its narrative structure can serve as an interesting example of the mobilizing of two force lines (the revolutionary impulse, turned into tradition in politics after the French Revolution, and the sublimation of a historic past, important feature o f the Romanticism) in a literature which aims at reformulating the aesthetic tendency and the sociopolitical reality in 19th century Portugal, thus acting directly on the public.
