Abstract

This essay intends to present to the Portuguese-speaking reader the poetry of Dambudzo Marechera (1952-87), probably the most famous writer in Zimbabwe. From the translation and analysis of some of his poems, the essay shows how, through rebelliousness and violence (above all, of the disrespectful subversion of the English language and the language of the English colonizer and ruler, as well as of his rules of social, political, and racial conduct), Marechera's poetry brings forth the identity and dignity of the free and independent Zimbabwean black man.
