Na obra Hospital Sketches, a autora estadunidense Louisa May Alcott narra sua experiência como enfermeira voluntária pela União, frente abolicionista na Guerra de Secessão norte-americana. A narrativa se origina de cartas enviadas por Alcott à sua família, posteriormente publicadas no jornal Commonwealth, de Boston, e compiladas como livro em 1863. Esta é uma tradução inédita de uma dessas entradas no diário de Tribulation Periwinkle, pseudônimo assumido pela autora em sua história como enfermeira em um hospital de campanha durante a guerra.
