Translation as Ghostwriting: A Reflection upon Originality in Chico Buarque’s Budapest

The purpose of this study is to analyze if and how Budapest (Buarque, 2014) main character, José Costa, may be understood as a metaphor for the process of recreation within translation. Therefore, I draw a parallel between often repeated concepts regarding such theme, such as originality, betrayal, ethics, and infidelity. As such, silence and emptiness also emerge as two important words integrating this arena, since the protagonist is built as a meta-text of himself and a metaphor of his own career, always trying to pass unnoticed in the texts that he “does not” write. A character within the character, and narrating his own life as if we were a narrative within the narrative, my hypothesis is that it is possible to see, in José’s construction, a deconstruction of the originality myth.
