A Review of Research on Orality Markers in Translations of Literary Fiction and Genre Fiction Bestsellers and New Analyses of Translations of Young Adult Literature

This paper presents results from an AntConc/Wordsmith Tools study on orality markers in dialogues of translated “literary fiction” and “genre fiction” books. The study shows that best-selling genre fiction novels by John Grisham, Agatha Christie and Troy Denning share two aspects: a) their authors have not gathered high symbolic capitals within the field of literary studies, and b) they display dialogues with few orality markers. Literary fiction novels by Philip Roth, Hemingway, Kazuo Ishiguro, and genre fiction ones by Shirley Jackson and Philip K. Dick exhibit high symbolic capital in the field of literary studies, and display several orality markers. It is not unlikely that part of the translations of best-selling genre novels, especially those lacking symbolic capital, yet attaining great commercial success (Bourdieu, 2015), could be influenced by a more conservative perception, on behalf of translators/editors, towards the representation of linguistic variation. However, translated novels by John Green and Jenny Han, both from the field of young adult literature, are shown to have abundant orality markers. On the other hand, neither of the authors have attracted wide symbolic repercussion within literary studies. We consider that the significant presence of orality markers in certain young adult novels, with low symbolic status, may be conditioned by other factors, such as the urge towards creating, for a young readership, a linguistic likeliness between fictional dialogues and “actual” teenage speech, since adolescent characters are key to the plots of young adult novels.
