Abstract

Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and the principles of Media and Information Literacy, this work provides an overview of Digital Literacy in global scientific literature in Information Science. It is a systematic review with an exploratory qualitative approach, aiming to identify the state of the art of Media and Information Literacy and the main discussions, challenges, and opportunities within the community and public libraries in the development of educational practices for Digital Literacy. Among the contexts of application, particular emphasis is placed on the growing concern with digital inequality among marginalized groups, communities, and neglected age groups. The main challenges identified refer to the lack of investment in public policies, the deficit in professional training, and the absence of specific digital development plans. It is concluded that the theme still has room for development in political and socioeconomic perspectives. On a positive note, there is an increase in Digital Literacy research with a critical social perspective. However, it is recommended that the theme be more fully appropriated within Information Science to enrich the discussions on Digital Literacy.
