Submission Deadline : 30 April 2025 Abstract

Climate change is one of the greatest global challenges of the 21st century. Even the most optimistic emission reduction scenarios predict significant shifts in the frequency and intensity of extreme climate events, leading to severe socio-environmental impacts. As such, climate adaptation plays a crucial role in addressing climate change—both in disaster prevention and in managing unavoidable impacts.

Adaptation will be a key topic at the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), to be held in Belém, Brazil, in November 2025. Many countries are already experiencing the consequences of climate change, which are expected to intensify over the coming decades. In Brazil, for example, recent years have seen severe floods in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, prolonged droughts in the Amazon, extreme heatwaves, and record-breaking wildfires across the country. These events highlight the urgent need for further studies and research on climate resilience, covering urban, peri-urban, and rural areas as well as conservation and protected forest zones.

In this context, we invite submissions to the Dossier on Adaptation to Extreme Climate Events and Socio-Environmental Resilience: Impacts, Challenges and Strategies for publication in the Journal Sustainability in Debate – SiD (CDS/UnB). We welcome scientific articles addressing the following themes:

  • Climate vulnerability and impacts
  • Disaster prevention
  • Climate impacts and justice
  • Climate resilience
  • Case studies on affected areas
  • Risk analysis and scenario modelling
  • Adaptive governance
  • Financing for climate adaptation
  • Ecosystem-based adaptation
  • The political dimension of climate adaptation

Other relevant topics may also be considered by the guest editors. However, this dossier prioritises unpublished research focused on climate adaptation and resilience. Articles may be submitted in Spanish, French, English, or Portuguese.
