Abstract

Mental disorders cause disability and premature death, as well as represent psychological, social and economic high costs. Although prevention and promotion programs in mental health with effectiveness evidence is available, they are less disseminated worldwide, particularly in Brazil. This article aims to discuss the diffusion of prevention and promotion programs in mental health, according to the lens of the Theory of Diffusion of Innovation and contemporary developments. Emphasis will be given to the phases of dissemination, adoption, implementation and sustainability. Implications for teaching, research and management are discussed.
