Efficacy of garlic extract (Allium sativum) as an antihelminthic in sheeps

Gastrointestinal sheep parasites result in a lot of costs to the owners. Its control is based on synthetic antihelminthic administration which stimulates the selection of drug resistant parasites. The aim of this study was to evaluate the garlic extract efficacy in ovine gastrointestinal parasitesin vivo. For this reason, 21 sheep were divided in 3 groups. The animals of Treatment I and II received 60g and 90 g of garlic extract, respectively, ina single dose, and the third group was considered the control group (non treated). Feces samples were collected in day 0,3, 8, 16 and 24 for the egg per gram test (EPG) and coproculture. There was no EPG reduction and no difference in the larvae generes identified in the coproculture. Therefore, the garlic extract had no antihelminthic effect in sheep in vivo, in the conditions of this experiment.
