Farming family and social innovation: the case of Ecovida Agroecology Network in Southern Brazil

Certification has become vital in trade relations involving the sale of organic products. In this terms, there are two systems or certification schemes. On the one hand, certification by a third party or by audit. On the other, the so-called "participatory guarantee systems" (PSG). Created in 2009, the "Brazilian System of Organic Conformity Assessment" (SisOrg) admits the coexistence of both systems. The Brazilian experience more important PGS is Ecovida Network. This paper aims to discuss the factors and circumstances that gave rise to the emergenceof Ecovida Network and characteristics of this form of certification. The research involved interviews with various agents linked to this organization. This experience has shown the potential of family farming to produce social innovation and a reference framework that formed the basis for the emergence of similar experiences in other countries.
