A necessidade de dar visibilidade à popularmente conhecida Fossa de Bananeira, nos instigou a apresentar aqui uma revisão bibliográfica desta que é a tecnologia social de saneamento ecológico mais propagada no Brasil. Nos últimos 16 anos, várias iniciativas foram desencadeadas na proposição e implementação de políticas públicas aptas a prover soluções de saneamento básico, tendo sido construídas cerca de 3000 unidades, configurando um grande legado à sociedade.
