Abstract

The ethnoichthyology research aims to understand the fisherman's knowledge on the fishing system, constructed through observations of the environment. Thisresearch was developed in Sacaí, a riverside community located at Caracaraí municipality, Roraima State. I t aimedto investigate which techniques are most used by the fishermen, which fish ethnospecies are caught and for what purpose are used. To collect data it were used observation and semi-structured interviews with artisanal fishermen. The material was analyzed with the help of the software QSR N Vivo ®. To calculate the value of use was adopted VU = ΣU / n. The results indicate that the priority of use of the fish caught is commercial "VUc", followed by food "VUa", and eventually these fishes are used for bait “VUi” or medicinal uses "VUm". Ten fishing techniques have been reported, and gill nets was mentioned as used by all fishermen. Finally with the consensus factor (FC), used to know about the consensus between the fishermen about the use of the ethnospecies, it was found that there is a greater consensus on ethnospecies used to trade and food, and a lower consensus among ethnospecies used to bait.
