Abstract

We evaluated the effect of the addition of fine coal in a substratum on the quality of cumaru (Dipteryx odorata) seedlings in a nursery. Treatments were 3:2:0.5 (v:v) of clay soil, sand and charcoal and a base mixture of 3:2:0.5 (v:v) of clay soil, sand and manure and its combination with 0, 0,5, 1,0 and 1,5 part of charcoal. The diameter (D) of the collect and the height (H) of the seedlings were measured every two months after the transplanting and at 191 days dry aerial mass (MSA) and root mass (MSR) were assessed, and survival rate was evaluated. The monthly medium increment of H and D, MSA/MSR, Dixon ́s index of quality, H/D and survival were calculated. Only survival was change by the treatments. The results suggest that 3:2:0.5 mixture of soil, sand and manure (v:v) may be replaced by 3:2:0.5:1.0 or 3:2:0.5:1.5 of soil, sand, manure and charcoal without damage to seedlings.
