Abstract

This study aimed to characterize backyards of the island Mem de Sá, Itaporanga D'Ajuda, Sergipe (Brazil) and create demonstration units (DU) based on agro-ecological production. From participatory methodologies were characterized plants and animals in 13 yards, as well as their way of handling performed in these spaces, noting the importance and function performed by the gardens for the residents. Have been found 49 plant species and the coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) and mango (Mangifera indica L.) stand out for their frequencies. There were small animals, especially birds, which are used in the household diet. Created a DU in order to exchange experiences of agro-ecological nature, valuing traditional knowledge in order to enhance the gardens. The yard presented itself as an important platform for the dissemination of values and knowledge, besides the production of foods that enrich the diet of residents.
