Food security through urban agriculture: a study case of two low-income communities in Porto Ferreira/SP

Urban Agriculture (UA) is able to promote benefits, specially related to Food and Nutrition Security (FNS). This study identified and characterized urban farmers in two communities in the city of Porto Ferreira/SP, analyzing UA contribution for their FNS. 91 UA plots were identified, where 20% of it was sampled through a structured questionnaire. It consisted mostly of low-income people with a rural background (83,0%), where the main reason for urban farming is food production for their livelihood(61,1%). Horticulture with no chemical inputs is the main farming system, with an average of 14 species. For 77,8% of the participants, the access to fruits and vegetables is guaranteed through UA, whether it iscomplemented by grocery shopping or not. The surplus of UA is also distributed throughout the neighborhoods (83,3%) and non-resident relatives (50,0%), in a solidary way. UA also helps families‘economy, as it reduces food expenses (94,4%). Overall, UA proved to be a relevant tool for FNS in those communities.
