Abstract

The influence of subsurface dams on the sustainability of semiarid agroecosystems should be studied from the social dynamics of farmers and their relationship with their environment. For this, qualitative methods were used based on the Evaluating the sustainability of Integrated Peasantry Systems–MESMIS Framework it and the Participatory Rural Appraisal - DRP in order to assess sustainability, from the perception of farmers, in two properties with subsurface dams in the semiarid of state of Paraiba, Brazil. The parameters vary from unsustainable (zero) to high sustainability (the value five). The two families in the study, although they are soon in the transition process agroecology, progress toward amore sustainable agroecosystem, and the underground reservoir as a potential technology to improve and balance the production process of family farming in the semiarid
