The aim of this work is to analyze the musical style called “cumbia villera” whose principal musical aspect is its outstanding simplicity. This characteristic lead us to think that the transcendency that this phenomenon had in Argentina at the end of the XX century depended on extramusical factors, the music being its powerful vehicle of transmission. Therefore, we analyze the origins of the cumbia villera, its evolution and the social aspects which contributed to the construction of this style as a cultural movement of masses. Through structured interviews, meetings and participation in recording sessions and television programs we designed our research centered in the musical aspects of two of the most important cumbia bands: Damas Gratis y Pibes Chorros. Following the folklore theories of Augusto Raúl Cortazar (1959, 1975) we considered that this phenomenon suffered a process of transcultural root.
