Abstract

The Punta Ballena urbanization located in Maldonado - Uruguay, was projected by the Architect Antonio Bonet Castellana between 1947 / 1950, and was declared National Historic Monument in 2009. He performs a notoriously modern urbanization, intervening an artificial pre existing forest.

He interprets and expresses the essence through a thorough intervention, where the road plot plays a central role. He separates vehicle and pedestrian creating footpaths through elevated footbridges that cross vehicular streets, generating a spatial and perceptive continuity.

Nowadays, the original trajectory does not exist anymore. Most of its pedestrian layout has been blurred and all the elevated bridges have been lost.

This work go over the experience of the Project “Value Enhancement of Punta Ballena Urbanization” where the process of Cultural Significance proposed by the Carta de Burra, 1979 (ICOMOS-Australia) is used as methodological basis to approach the specific objective of patrimonialization of the territory from the perspective of Modern Heritage.

The general objective is to link this process of belonging of the Community with its landscape, with the need and the right to the permanence of our territory as a differential when it comes to social representation from the point of view of sustainability and heritage preservation.
