The use of audioguides as a facilitating resource for understanding heritage in the exhibition environment of an Amazonian aquarium for people with visual impairments (PCDV)

Abstract

The study analyzes the impact of the audioguide as an assistive technology at the Jacques Huber Amazon Aquarium, exploring its potential for inclusion of people with visual impairments (PCDs). The justification lies in the need to expand cultural and natural accessibility, considering the historical exclusion of visually impaired individuals. The objectives include evaluating the use of the audioguide as an accessible resource, understanding users' perceptions, and proposing improvements based on principles of accessibility and inclusive communication. To this end, the methodology employs a qualitative approach, featuring semi-structured interviews with nine participants of varying ages and degrees of visual impairment. The method integrates theoretical concepts such as Foucault's heterotopias and the triad of Accessibility, Social Inclusion, and Universal Design. Consequently, the study identifies innovative practices and gaps in the implementation of assistive technologies and digital accessibility, outlining strategies to enhance the sensory and symbolic experiences of visitors in the exhibition space.
