This paper aims at analyzing the narratives of a Letras undergraduate student in terms of previous events related to the decision of pursuing this degree. The study is based on oral narratives though interviews with an undergraduate student from a federal university located southeast Brazil. The accounts were qualitatively analyzed based on the concept of perezhivanie defined by Vygotsky (2019). The results indicate that the decision to pursue a degree in Letras stems from previous experiences that characterize an identification with the course, mainly in fields such as reading and Literature. Thus, the perezhivanie considers the relation between the person and the social environment, the interaction with others and mainly the sense that was built regarding everything she has lived before and in relation to what she is currently going through. The study seeks to contribute to debates within Applied Linguistics about language teacher education and more specifically to a cultural-historical perspective.
