Abstract

This squib deals with the symbouletic modality in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). This type of modality is characterized in the literature as denoting advice or suggestion and is described as essentially performative (cf. Yanovich 2014; Monawar & Stray 2017). Based on data from BP, we show that the symbouletic modal does not have its use restricted to performative statements of advice or suggestion, since it also appears in constructions that express the speaker's ethical and / or moral values, not directed directly at a specific participant. Considering it and also aspects related to the orientation of this modal, which can appears in statements with a specific addressee, generic or, even, without any addressee, we propose a more comprehensive definition for the symbouletic modality, a definition that we suppose to give a better account of the contexts of the use about this modal.
