Contradiction and Conflict in "The Girl from Ipanema" (Getz/Gilberto, 1964)

This text analyzes the phonogram "The Girl from Ipanema," part of the album Getz/Gilberto (Verve Records, 1964), based on a formal analysis that considers the interaction between words and musical intonation as an expression of the dialectic between unity and diversity capable of revealing aspects of its song structure as well as its relationship to the flow of Brazilian song and history. Ultimately, we hope to demonstrate the viability of the dialectical literary criticism approach to questioning commercial Brazilian song productions.
