This article reflects on the urgent need to strengthen democratic values and the exercise of citizenship from childhood onwards, in view of the growing implementation of the militarization model in Brazilian public schools today. It starts with the analysis of the guidelines of the National Program of Civic-Military Schools (PECIM) between 2019 and 2022. Bibliographic and documentary studies were carried out seeking to answer the questions: What type of citizen does public school tend to form through citizenship practiced in the teaching standards, values and behaviors adopted by the military? What ethos of values guides the defense of the military in command of the management and educational processes of Brazilian public schools? In opposition to school militarization, an education project for democracy based on the exercise of citizenship since childhood is defended, with a view to implementing an ethos of values more in tune with a democratic society and the guarantee of rights and social justice.
