Abstract

Controversial topics are issues that have the potential to affect society, individuals, in short, the school in general. In Physics it seems inevitable not to address controversial issues, since its content is closely linked to contemporary issues. This study was of a qualitative nature, in which a case study was used. The study was of a qualitative nature, in which a case study was used based on a questionnaire with open questions. The sample was composed of seven physics teachers from public high schools in the city of Itabaiana/Sergipe. The results of the research seem to show us that the questioned teachers recognize the benefits of working in the classroom from themes that encompass the social relations of science and, somehow, they try to find ways to introduce in their practices situations that may involve controversial issues. However, we suspect that, even if this is true, this is done in a traditional teaching context, i.e., students tend to have little opportunity to develop the necessary skills to question, discuss, generate hypotheses, evaluate situations, find evidence, conduct research, in short, to develop an environment in which it is necessary to make decisions.
