Abstract

This essay discusses the models and transformations of fairies’ iconography from High Middle Ages to the 20th century. Exposing at first the most prevalent notions on these beings in medieval culture, and then discussing their subsequent
transformations, this study aims to determine, approximately, when and how their most characteristic iconographic elements have been attributed to them, emphasis being given on the discussion of the role of classical iconography and Romantic medievalism therein.
