Abstract

Diatraea flavipennella (Box) is a major insect that affect the sugarcane culture in northeastern Brazil. The present study aimed to investigate alternative control through the selection of isolates URPE-3,URPE-4, URPE-18, URPE-22 and ESALQ 447 of Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuilleman and PL43, E9, ESALQ 1189, URPE-11 and URPE-19 Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorokin in concentration 107 conidia / mL-1 on eggs of 24, 48 and 72 hours age and larvae in the 2nd instar. The isolates of M. anisopliae tested showed 100% infected on eggs of 24 and 48 hours age and range of 60 to 100% infectionon eggs 72 hours age. The ESALQ 447, E9 and ESALQ 1189 isolates, stood out when applied on larvae, with average mortality of 70,8, 72,2 and 61,2%, respectively. Regarding the survival of treated larvae, the ESALQ 447 and ESALQ 1189 isolates were more virulent with values of 5,8 ± 0,93 and 3,2 ± 0,18 days, respectively (χ2= 26,24<0, 0001; χ2= 93,83<0, 0001). The results show that the fungus B. bassiana and M. anisopliae, may be potential agents in the management of D. flavipennella.
