Contributions of local knowledge about the use ofEugeniaspp. in polycultures and agroforestry systems

Abstract

The use of species of tropical and subtropical Brazilian flora, such as the botanical genus Eugenia, is a profitable alternative to agricultural production, and this knowledge is preserved in the cultural heritage of local communities. Records of local knowledge were utilized to analyze the use ofEugeniaspp. for the agricultural production based on agroecology. Data from scientific literature were collected by using key words, such as Eugenia and ethnobotany. These references were grouped in their respective regions of Brazil, identifying and quantifying the mentioned species and their use. Local communities from differentregions use Eugenia spp., especially Eugenia uniflora which had the highest number of records of scientifically described activities in local communities; however, other species of the genus also had records. It is recommended for stomach ailments and sore throat because of their anti-inflammatory or antioxidant properties. These data show the potential of these species for agroecological perspectives.
