Abstract

The essential oils can affect negatively the growth, development and reproduction of several insects on stored products. The aim of this study was to detect the insectistatic effect of essential oil of Pothomorphe umbellata (L.) Miq. against Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius, 1792) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae). Tests were made to determine the Lethal Concentration (LC), repellency and fumigation test. The LC50values, obtained for 24 hours and 48 hours, were 0.21 e 0.12 μL/cm2, respectively. The essential oil was more effective in 48 hours of evaluation in toxicity by contact test. There was repellent effect on the insects in LC5 (0.02μL/cm2) in one hour after evaluation as than after 24 hours. There was no repellent effect in LC10 (0.03μL/cm2). It was not possible to identify the LC50 for fumigation test (vapor pressure), being possible to be above of 1.6 μL/cm3. The essential oil of P. umbellata has the potential to control the pest of stored grain as R. dominica.
